The best car I ever had, own it now 8 years, 1 breakdown due to a battery. I have used this car as a taxi and now have over 400,000 on it. A good guide on a car is to look what taxi men use, thats reliablity. Must also speak for the 06 2ltr model, have 200,000 on it, injectors replaced by vw, rear calipers & clutch kit replaced by myself. serviced every 10,000. good driving car

The B5 facelift Passats are 100 times the car the pre-facelift B5's are. I know because I have had both! I would buy a facelift B5 (01-05) in a heartbeat again. I wouldn't **** on a pre-facelift to be honest. They are a bung of dung compared to the facelifts. Facelift (01-05) 4.5/4.8 star out of 5. Pre facelift (96/97-2000) 3.0 out of 5.

The only car I've ever owned that drives as solid as a good BMW.
The comfort is incredible and the mpg is amazing. It just drives forever.
One of the most reliable cars on the road still today.
A real shame the new model VW Passat has so many faults. This older model had none.
Best family car we've had. We paid over book price for a good one and it never let us down.

Own a 2008 Passat 1.9 Diesel. We do big mileage and this car is fantastic.
Very roomy and comfortable. Very economical averaging 50 - 53 MPG.
I cannot speak highly enough of this car. It has 145,000 miles on the clock. Fly wheel was replaced 15,000 miles ago but every car needs maintenance from time to time.
I had a number of Audi A4's before this car and I would rate the Passat much higher for reliability, comfort and space.

So much for VW rock solid reliability! I had a 2006 Passat TDI 140 SE from new, within 1 year the electric handbrake started playing up (failing to activate first time, holding the car when I didn't want it to) then one morning I woke up to find that it had rolled off our driveway into the house across the road! That resulted in VW taking the car back for over 3 months to fix it. Then after 2 years the power steering pump failed leaving the car having to be towed away. Next problem was the boot lid, at times it wouldn't open then when driving along it'd randomly pop up. The quality was pretty poor, too many hard scratchy plastics on the door cards and lower dash. All the buttons on radio and electric window switches started to wear away too which just went to show the poor quality of the interior. In 2010 the clutch and flywheel went bang so I decided it was time to get rid. All in all, I will never have another Volkswagen about me, hated this Passat in just about every way! My brother is having problems with his 2011 Golf GTD after 9 months, been back to VW 3 times!

We have 3 VW Passat TDI's in our family. Not sporty, but very reliable.Cheap road tax. Easy 50-55MPG average. Full Service History preferred. Only the Timing belt changed & new clutch/flywheel needed at 120,000 miles. Now 180,000. No problems. Noisier than our 2006 Passat TDI, but we are impressed. Never broken down.
